| Katie Curtis returned to education four years ago as a mature student studying Education Studies at The University of Winchester (what was then King Alfred’s College, Winchester). As a new student of 26 years of age she thought it might be a struggle to fit in with the younger members of the student population but she found a way around that - by throwing herself into the life of the students' union. In her forth week at university she was elected as Mature Student Rep and subsequently Chair of Union Council and was involved from that moment on. She was an active member of the Women’s Hockey & Football teams and the LGBT Society whilst being a co-founder of the Women’s Society, a part-time Exec member as Academic Affairs Officer 2004-2006 and then finally President 2006-2007. During her sabbatical year Katie was LGBT Officer for SEANUS (South East Area NUS) and a member of the Mature Student National Committee. Now as a part-time National Executive Committee member on the block of 12, Katie has responsibilities within the Further Education and Higher Education zones and is also NUT Scholarship Holder and BMA Medical Student Committee Observer for 2007-2008. In this important time of change within the organisation Katie is also a member of the NUS Governance Review Steering Committee.
