- Regional Conferences week. Once again up and down the country on a whistle stop tour. This time gave updates of re-organisation and finances, in particular the year of change group which allowed the relevant regional reps to meet ‘newbies’ to regional conference and also help to break down some of the myths around the group. It’s important to note that the group are in no way decision-makers, the are there to act as advocates for the up and ensure that the research is collected and presented fairly. The other thing I really enjoyed seeing delegates reactions to was the co-operative housing presentation done by Helen Symons the VP Welfare, more info is online, but basically it is a ver radical solution that could fundamentally change the student housing market.
There are however lots of things that really annoy me at regional conferences and unfortunately most of them revolve around the NEC. There are several NEC members who fail to turn up consistently without apology, there are those who turn up late every single day and then there are those who turn up only in London, sometimes when there supposed to be on the other stream ie; in East Anglia. Then there are those who ask questions of those presenting from the front table, when they have opportunities to do that internally on a regular basis. Basically it strikes me that in NUS there are some of us who believe in collective responsibility and some who don’t, and that is incredibly frustrating.
- NUSSL board, various discussions, particularly around the upcoming NUSSL Convention in Liverpool.
