NEC Report
22/08/2005

I have been out of the office over the last couple of weeks and have not had a great deal of time to blog in any great detail. However, here is a copy of my NEC report that I am required to produce for accountability. I hope you will email me with any questions or comments that you might have. This is mainly a summary of where I am at with work that I am currently involved in.

• One of my priorities has been to establish an Anonymous Marking campaign. I am working with some of the task force members and Pav as the campaign is one of the priorities of the Black Students Campaign. It will be launch on the web next week, the interactive campaign will firstly ask for information from students’ unions illustrating where the gaps are in anonymous marking provision across the UK.

• I have been working to set up meetings with appropriate partners on the issue of plagiarism. Our officers need support in how to implement this campaign in their unions.

• I have been writing bids to external organisations to help us fund the European Student Convention, which is due to take place in December. I have had an agreement from the DfES that they will meet the majority of the expense.

• I have met with the Europe Unit at Universities UK to explore ways that the Bologna Process can be better understood and increase engagement in the process by our members. The effects of the process need to be communicated in an accessible and inclusive way

• I have been on a couple of union visits to help some education officers with building their campaigns for the year ahead and talking to them about NUS Education campaign

• I have held the first Equal opps meeting (with Veronica) and the education task force to discuss the future direction of the campaign

• Press have covered plenty of aspects of education so far over the last few weeks which is amazing and I am determined to release statements about each aspect of the campaign once the priority campaign launch has happened

• I have led (with Veronica) on two Action Through Advocacy events in both Hatfield and Preston

• I have started to make initial arrangements for the Regional Welfare and Education Network days to take place later in the year

• Last week I represented NUS at the Annual National Post Graduate Conference. I offered the conference an opportunity to sit on the Education Task Force to help give some direction to the development of our policy regarding post grad students
