This month I learnt about a campaign called Dignity, Period!, which highlights the shortage and high cost of tampons and sanitary towels in Zimbabwe. Thabitha Kumalo spoke at Women’s Conference this year about the situation for women in Zimbabwe, and highlighted the fact the women die because they do not have access to proper sanitary protection, and young girls often miss a weeks schooling every month, meaning that they are disadvantaged academically for life. I have never seen a conference sit in complete silence, and then give a speaker a standing ovation in the same way as women’s conference did this year.
