One of the best things about being on the NEC is when you get to do college visits. I love getting on a train and watching the countryside go by - visions of green fields and barren hills interupted by towns and cities that change depending on your direction - old mining communities or modern office blocks, all inviting you to get off the train and explore their winding streets and historical buildings...
Gracious, where did that come from? I'm currently en route back to Oxford, having been to Bradford to meet Hannah, UBU's sabbatical Women's Officer and I think I might have spent too much time travelling if I'm babbling on about the view from the train window!
Over the past few weeks I've been to meet the full-time Women's Officers in Swansea, Oxford, Glamorgan, Lancaster and Bradford, with Manchester and Cambridge coming up soon. I daren't add up the hours I've spent on various trains getting around the country, but I've really enjoyed meeting everyone and finding out what your plans are for this year.
Funnily enough, although the methods of campaigning will no doubt differ greatly, the subjects are similar across the country. Setting up successful women's groups, V-Day and violence against women, the gender pay gap, International Women's Week, pro-choice and sexual health, women's participation in student unions, access to childcare on campus, fair treatment from from teaching staff...
The issues we face as women are infinite - and I firmly believe that the best people to represent us and to campaign for change are women so that we can collectively achieve what many people pay lipservice to -- equality and liberation for all.
