Sorry about the delay in blogs, it’s all been a bit hectic, what with National Conference following tight on the heels of Women’s Conference!
Here are the results from the full-time elections:
- National President - Kat Fletcher
- National Secretary - Gemma Tumelty
- National Treasurer - Joe Rukin
- VP Further Education - Ellie Russell
- VP Education - Julian Nicholds
- VP Welfare - Veronica King
Congratulations to Kat for her amazing election result - as far as I know, she is the first NUS National President to be elected on the first round. Well done mate, you've turned NUS around this year and I can't wait for next year!
And, of course, let's not forget Ellie Russell, the first ever Vice President Further Education elected by FE students alone! Your Hustings speech was absolutely incredible and you won and deserved every single vote. The FE sector is lucky to have you (and judging from the cheers on conference floor when they announced your results, I think they know it!)
The Block of 12 ballots aren't being counted until Thursday - good luck to all the candidates still waiting on their results.
There’s loads to report from Conference, so I’ll get writing ASAP - especially about the pro-choice debate, which I’m extremely excited about as NUS passed an amendment to support a woman’s right to choose. As far as I’m concerned, that totally outweighs some groups’ press releases last year when didn’t get to discuss the Resolutions documents from the Liberation Conferences. Some people thought this meant NUS was somehow opposed to abortion (a lie - Women’s Campaign policy was later ratified by National Council) but now National policy says it loud and says it clear - support a woman’s right to choose, defend and extend the 1967 Abortion Act.
Congratulations once more to the successful candidates.
