2004 - the good and the bad
Another year, another set of New Year resolutions to make and then break, another chance to look back and reminisce...
In the spirit of it being a brand-new year (and in the hope that looking back over the past twelve months will make me forget that I’m turning 26 in less than a week) I thought I’d do my very own review of 2004 - what was good, and what wasn’t!
The worst
So here we go - in no particular order, here are my suggestions for the worst things that happened in 2004...
- Asian tsunami (Visit the Disasters Emergency Committee website to see how you can help)
- Bush winning the US election
- Top up fees
- Continuing global AIDS crisis - in 2004, there were 4.9 million new HIV infections - that's almost 13,500 people per day - and in the same period, AIDS caused over three million deaths - 510,000 among children under 15
- Stories about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners and the deaths of hostages, and the continuing conflict in Iraq
- Humanitarian crisis in Dafur, Sudan
- Belsan school siege
- Madrid bomb attacks
The best
And to cheer you all up, again in no particular order, here are my suggestions for the best things that happened in 2004...
- Civil Partnerships Act
- Winning my election!
- DDA part 3
- Expansion of the EU
- Olympics - the success of Athens 2004 and the London 2012 bid
- Spanish election results
- Ukraine elections protest - who says that the people can’t make a difference?
- 10 year anniversary of the end of apartheid in South Africa
