Joy of Blogging
15/08/2006

This is the first blog of my NUS Sabbatical year

When I said in my Manifesto at election time that there would be a steep learning curve regarding the position. Looking back I can see how much of an underestimation that really was. The tasks over the year ahead are huge and hitting the floor running is an absolute must. Campaigning preparation, media work, lobbying, meetings with decision making authorities just to name a few have been the order since taking office.

Saying goodbye to the University I have been at in one way or another for six years was a difficult task but the time there will be remembered in a good light and will miss it, but on-ward we go.

Before starting in the role I attended a meeting the Education Minister for Wales 'Jane Davidson' at the National Assembly which, was a great experience in terms of understanding how important the student voice is in Wales.

I also attended a meeting with the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) 26th June 2006 which, really gave me an insight into the role regarding working with National decision makers.

Upon starting in my new role I attended NEC induction on the week commencing 3rd July. Unfortunately I could not make from the start but it was fantastic to meet the Block elected from National Conferences who are very well informed as well as extremely competent in their roles. Fortunately they are also patient which, for me is a real blessing. (Note attempt of humor (subtle I know)).

Upon my return it was hand-over time which, was a huge relief as I could ask all those questions about queries that I did not have knowledge on before. (For those who say there is no such thing as a stupid question I think that I proved you wrong (getting there on the humor???). I would just like to take this to thank Dylan Williams (last years NUSW President) and hope him all the best in the future.

After the hand-over I attended a Liberation's Day at Warwick University on 19th July (situated in Coventry, who would have thought). This really changed my perception on so many issues, the main one being that there are invisible barriers. Meaning that even if you would like to have the help of people from differing area's that is not enough as it is perceived that they are not welcome or don't feel they can participate.

Overall it was a very good event with excellent speakers including a female speaker (apologies for not remembering her name) who spoke about working together and making minorities majorities. This really hit home. (Hats off to Kat Stark and the other organizers of the event).

On the 20th July I was in London for a NEC Education Campaign Planning meeting where it was great to catch up with some of the guys again, as well as getting some really good brain storming done.

Back to Cardiff on the 21st July for a learning and Teaching Committee meeting with HEFCW where I managed to get some really good contacts regarding campaigns discussed in an informal meeting during NECW induction and training.

The first NECW meeting took place at NUSW HQ in Cardiff 2nd August (NB. A day before National) where we discussed priority campaigns and fine tuned responsibilities. It was extremely positive and I believe we have a strong team to face the challenges of the year ahead.

Then NEC in London again on 3rd July which, was an interesting affair that included lively debate as well as some good policy passed. I hope he will not mind me saying but the meeting also included a very moving address from Joe Rukin. I am glad you were given the opportunity and I hope all is well (Although support a team like Coventry. Get in City (Cardiff that is) 1-0 all the way, YES!!!)

Last week was taken up by the National Eisteddfod (A festival celebrating Welsh culture) where NUSW has a stand over the week. The fringe of the festival gives us a great opportunity to speak to Assembly members and lobby as well as aiding future lobbying.

Friday 11th August I commiserated my 25th birthday and that is the end of this BLOG.

Apologies for the length but I did want to tell of most of the things I have been up to as it has been my first.
