Ok, so I’m not the best blogger in the world. But then, my mother always told me ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all’.
Well, in fact, I’m pleased to say I do have something nice to say.
On May 24th the National Assembly for Wales voted not to introduce top-up fees for Welsh students studying in Wales. This is a significant vote for the government, as even though the decision will be made by the Cabinet it still has to be ratified by the Assembly as a whole.
It’s fantastically symbolic on a UK level to rule out top-up fees in Wales and to stand with Scotland to make England the exception, not the rule.
But, of course, the fight goes on. The vote was only passed by one vote, and all the government needs to do is to find one vote from another party to make top-up fees in Wales a reality.
Wales needs you again! So many of you turned up to the national demo in Cardiff for what was the biggest student demonstration in Wales – ever!
But on June 21st when the government makes its response to the recent Rees report (which recommends top-up fees) we need to be there.
Welsh unions will be lobbying their AM’s inside, but we need to have a high profile protest outside the Assembly, to show the solidarity and strength of feeling of student activists from across the UK.
Please come to Cardiff and help stop top-up fees!
