A new study by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) and the Fellowship of Reconciliation has found that 1,900 military projects were conducted in 26 major British universities between 2001 and 2006, with a value of at least £725million.
The Government's own military research establishment was involved in a quarter of these projects, but over two thirds involved multinational arms companies Rolls Royce, BAE Systems and QinetiQ. These companies, amongst the largest manufacturers of weapons of mass destruction in the world, provide military equipment for, amongst other things, the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Our universities are no place for contracts with these companies, which are complicit in bringing misery daily to people in the Middle East. Campaigns to pressure universities to end their dealings with such companies – including through the selling of shares – have met with success recently and further campaigning is planned.
