Steering met on Saturday night 11th and then all day Sunday to go through the amendments submitted and do initial composite. I feel we have been far more productive and efficient as a committee this year, we have really change things for the better, allowing unions to participate far more.
Tuesday 14th February – yes you did read that right – valentines day I spent at glorious national council, where once again, the NEC dominated, and it became an NEC meeting with more observers – we really need to change how this meeting operates – there’s a challenge to the next National Secretary! We discussed issues such as civil liberties, whether NEC can actually vote or not, the layout of the NUS Directory, the AUT strike, censures on Joe Rukin for estimates and communication with a union.
Wednesday 15th February I attended the FE lobby on the learner voice, it was fabulous, over 80 FE students attended and we had speeches from Ellie Russell, Bill Rammell, Barry Sheerman, Barry Lovejoy and John Brennan about the upcoming white paper and the Foster Review. The media loved it and Ellie is apparently due for due for Downing St and is now officially our “secret weapon” well not so secret anymore!! We now have over MPs signed up to the EDM – please get in touch with yours if they haven’t. We are awaiting the white paper with baited breath!
For the remainder of the week I met with the Training Dept about Summer Training, I met with the Campaigns team about Participate campaign, I met with events about fringes and stalls, I met with management about the strategic plan (again- I’m fast becoming VP Strategic Plan)
