AGM’s, affiliation debates, Kick Racism Out campaigning, My Birthday and a Student Media Day
21/11/2005

The week of the 17th October I definitely did the rounds, I spoke at Hertfordshire’s, Warwick’s and Westminster’s Annual General Meetings, I spoke against Pete Goodman (Cardiff SU) in an NUS affiliation debate at Reading SU, I went up to Worcester SU to help out with their Kick it Out campaign as part of the Participate: actions speak louder than words campaign and I went up to Newcastle for our first ever Student Media Day.

In between all this traveling, visiting, speech writing and speech delivery I worked on the regional conference presentations and agenda, went to a management meeting, did emails and phone calls and celebrated turning 25!

I really enjoy going to AGM’s to speak and I was particularly pleased to be invited to speak about fees at Warwick’s AGM. As National Secretary people would rarely think of inviting me to talk about fees, they would ask the National President or the VP Education or VP Further Education but the National Secretary…. what does she do? ummmm student activities, democracy, affiliation, maybe…but talk about fees? Don’t know about that!

Well I relished the chance to talk passionately about something I really care about, so thank you Kat Stark for thinking to ask me!!

I also had all my hair cut off this week, maybe it was a mid twenties, snap decision sort of crisis but luckily it looks ok, maybe makes me look younger as I got ID’d for a bottle of wine! That made me feel better about myself!

The NUS/BUSA/Kick it Out coordinated day of action for student sport went extremely well. I went up to Worcester to support their campaign, Ash had got a local FC Chairman, some players and the VC plus their football team and UCE’s team to engage in the campaign and it was great. Check out pictures and story here www…..

I also know that UCE did some great campaigning on this day and also numerous other unions took part, we would love your stories and photos to put on the website, so please email them to me at gemma.tumelty@nus.org.uk

Our first ever student media day went so well, and student writers and editors and broadcast journalist took part in a series of workshops and debates throughout the day. The feedback we had was great and I’m looking forward to the other two.

I had a fabulous birthday weekend, going to Jongleurs on the Friday night and out clubbing to Turnmills on the Saturday. So a full weekend off for me!
