Yet more Campaigns Meetings, Year of Change, a very different kind of Annual Leave, TUC and the office move!
The week after the campaigns launch things didn’t calm down at all, straight onto the next projects and trying to catch up with emails!
On Monday 5th September I had a Priority Campaigns meeting and a Student Union Development Team meeting which I co-convene with Ellie Russell (VP FE). The priority campaign is really shaping up now; we have a timetable of events and action and have now sorted the branding visit www.officeronline.co.uk to find out more. The SU development team meeting discussed the Youth Matters Green Paper, good governance and the charities bill, student media, volunteering and the Russell Commission, London 2012 and planned out how we were going to write our section of the NEC Report and Plan.
On Tuesday 6th I went to Loughborough to meet the current Chair of National Council to discuss the Year of Change project and the MORI research and to steal some of Loughborough’s Union Council structure as ideas for National Council Reform. Whilst I was there I also caught up with the sabb team who were all working extremely hard in the run up to Freshers.
Wednesday 7th I met with our Press Officer and the London Student Editor about the Student Media Day in London and also gave the last ever tour around Holloway Rd to Dave from Goldsmiths before we move to Camden!
It’s scary but thoughts in NUS are already turning to Annual Conference (in more ways than one!) so I met with the events department about the conference mailing and some of the logistics of conference. On Thursday 8th we had another campaigns meeting and then in the afternoon I set of on my annual leave.
I was invited to Israel with the Union of Jewish Students on their “Young Political Leaders Trip” and spent a very informative 4.5 days there meeting politicians, academics, Israelis and Palestinians. It has probably left me with questions but it answered some of the questions I had before I went, if that makes sense? I’m more than happy to talk to anyone about my thoughts and experiences should you want to know more!
I arrived back from Annual Leave and went straight to the Trades Union Congress where I attended fringe meetings on Justice for Columbia and Iraqi Trade Union Solidarity. In the evening I went to the Endsleigh Annual Dinner which was very good with lots of wine and mingling with Trade Unionists and other people and organisations that are involved in the student movement in some way.
Thursday and Friday when I got back from Brighton with a cracking hangover I spent helping move NUS out of Holloway Rd and into Camden. Well done to everyone who worked so hard to make it go relatively smoothly!
