Loosing my Bloginity!
27/07/2005

Well here goes my first blog!

What the lovely people at NUS don’t tell you is when you run in an election at conference is that the moment that you start being a member of the NEC is the day that you are elected and not the 1st July, so for the first two months I was trying to balance the work of being on the block and being VP Welfare at UCLAN.

It all started with 3 sunny days up in Edinbourough for the LGBT conference, for all of you that were there enough said!

A week or so later I was not to far from home in Liverpool at the Hidden Disabilities day, which was really great to see so many people attending. I hope that all of the delegates got a lot out of the day. It was nice to see so many people attending my dyslexia workshop and I hope that you are all keen to run a campaign in your institutions. (Remember, Remember Dyslexia Awareness Week: 7th-13th November)

Towards the end of June the whole NEC went away on there own training. I was told that the weather would be sunny, accommodation on arrival and it was 10 mins from the airport. To my dismay when the joining instructions it was at Ribby Hall about a 7-min train ride from Preston were I live.

As I finished on the 30th June in my own union, it was full throttle ahead to the 1st July my official start at NUS. I had an invite to attend Sunderland’s G8 event by Sunderland City College. The day was blissfully hot and extremely well attended; I also got to meet the 2 most quickly counted MPs in the country, Chris Mullen for Sunderland South, Fraser Kemp for Sunderland North and George Galloway!

The following day along with 250,000 other people I traveled up too Edninbourough once again for the G8. It was an amazing day and was fantastic to see so many different age range of people their. The whole atmosphere was very much like a Carnival or a festival and not a single bit of trouble. During the 2 mins silence I was still on the demonstration route so I joined the St Martins gang and Kat Lewis to sit down in middle of the road and hold hands, soon others were joining us and it was a really special moment.

Since then I have also attended SWD Committee Meting, LGBT Committee Meeting and the Southeast Manifesto to Action which was great to meet all the new Saabs for the SE.

I am planning the E&E campaign with Will Page at the moment and getting dates for the E&E conference, watch this space and I hope this year’s first edition of ‘Grass Roots’ will be in your unions soon.

If you have any questions or want to get involved with anything that I will be working on please email me at flick.cox@nus.org.uk
