This is the most important Annual Conference for a generation. It’s a scandal that we spend more money on the democratic processes than campaigning for progressive change, and our current structures are clearly unsustainable.
There are some groups within NUS who have a disproportionate amount of power, an unfair level of influence and are removed from the realities that we face on the ground within students’ unions. The new governance model establishes new structures to redress the balance, but we can not stop until students’ unions are in full control of the agenda, where student officers fully understand NUS, how they can deliver national campaigns on a local level and where there are volunteering opportunities for all.
This week we have seen LGBT students recognising the need for change. “The review looks at better supporting the liberation campaigns and our committees.”
Each delegate, each student officer, every students’ union has a responsibility to change NUS.
At Conference we are fighting for the future of the student movement. We can not fail, we must deliver reform, we have to win.
Come along to the Rally and Information Session from 10am on the Tuesday of Annual Conference. If you want to speak or share your thoughts let us know.
A new national union is possible. Choose Change.
