Hello everybody, wow what a busy time it’s been since I took office and I have structured my report to detail what events I have attended or meetings I have had first, then finally I will reflect on the upcoming issues in this year.
The events and meetings section is not a conclusive list but it does reflect the range and diversity of the day to day duties that the President of NUS Wales has to deal with.
July
I attended and helped with union executive training in Cardiff students’ union and I gave a presentation on the year ahead to Swansea students’ union and Glamorgan students’ union. I felt these went very well and it was really good to get a sense of what the priorities are for such very different students’ unions.
I then attended a four day residential training course with NUS UK NEC in Trafford Hall (near Chester) where we went over the strategy of NUS and the campaigns for the year ahead as well as finding out a lot about each other.
I had a liaison meting with the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) about our then upcoming joint project on student involvement and other issues relating to student access including bursarys.
I then attended active political leadership training up in Lancaster which lead to myself having a greater understanding of the apathy staircase and an understanding of how to make campaigns relevant to ‘real’ students. This was all followed by a 15 hour car journey / boat ride back to Cardiff! (Trying to short cut through Worcester wasn’t the best idea).
Another key liason meeting in July was with the Royal College of Nursing about the representation that we could help them in giving to their members in Wales on particular nursing related issues.
