Political correctness – Has it gone too far?
13/12/2006

Last week I spoke at a debate at Warwick art centre about political correctness and has it gone too far. My answer...

NO!

Firstly I want to give what I define as political correctness.

“Using language or behaviours which respect other peoples equality!”

I use this definition because this is the value that political correctness was formed upon.

So when I hear people say “That’s just political correct nonsense” , “That’s political correctness gone mad” What do they mean when they say this? Surely its like saying 1+1=1 is in correct and 1+1=3 is too correct! Is it actually possible to be too correct?

You see over the years the actual term political correctness has been misinterpreted and has led to people (Who some of which mean no harm) say “We can’t say black coffee anymore, we have to say coffee with out milk” “Political correctness takes away free speech!” “Political correctness is just about red tape, when I want to do something I have to think about health and safety” But my favourite (Your going to love this one Kat mate) “Just in case there is anyone else left in the country that might still be enjoying themselves – Lets ban smoking, fox hunting let feminists launch a totally unfounded attack on men.”

To all that I say “BOOOO!”, Like, really.

As if red tape is about political correctness surely that is just burracracy

“Can’t say black coffee” Black coffee is black coffee, you are describing what it is

The last statement “Just in case there is anyone else left in the country that might still be enjoying themselves – Lets ban smoking, fox hunting let feminists launch a totally unfounded attack on men.” - Just plain rude!

Anyways

If we live in a democratic society and believe in democracy which comes hand in hand with equality, why do we find being politically correct a bad thing? Going back to my definition. If something is said to any human being on this planet that questions their equality and then tries to cover it up by saying “Political correctness has one mad”(Again if someone knows what this actually means please get in contact!) Just like Tory councilor, Ellenor Bland, sending a horrendously racist poem around the office and when questioned said. “That’s just political correctness gone mad!” But she replied to this poen with a comment like “This is so true!”.

“We declare our right on this earth to be a person, to be a human being to be given the rights of a human being, to be respected as a human being in this society, on this earth in this day, which we intended to bring into existence” Malcom X

humpty dumpty reading a book on politcal correctness

WHATEVER! The fact that Humpty Dumpty fell off a wall destroyed Humpty Dumpy.

Comments on a postcard………
