| Universities secretary John Denham tells the Times that, in a bid to widen access, potential undergraduates will be able to apply for student loans at the same time as they apply for courses. "That way, they would know where they stand from the outset," he says. The move comes as new figures suggest that many students are leaving university with more debt than their annual salary. Figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) highlighted that three years after graduation, 34 per cent of men and 42 per cent of women earned less than they owe. Read more.
