Sukula family give indefinate leave in the UK

Flores Sukula speaking at an NUS event

NUS Black Students’ Campaign’s long running support for the Sukula family has ended with success as the family has been granted indefinite leave to stay in the UK. The family have been living in Bolton in 2002 after fleeing persecution in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Black Students’ Campaign led the drive from the students' movement to persuade the Home Office to let them stay after they were initially refused asylum. Flores has spoken regularly at our national conferences and wishes to thank all the students who have helped. NUS wishes her the best of luck with her ambition to study health studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Why are Muslim prayer rooms needed on campus?

Added on 23/04/2008

The Muslim holy text

Many universities have dedicated space for Muslim prayers, however, not everyone is at this stage. NUS supports the need for such space and the Welfare Campaign is currently undertaking a survey on Muslim prayer rooms at universities up and down the country so that we can better help you, our members, provide better services for your Muslim students.

It is an obligation upon all Muslims to pray five times a day, with each prayer occurring at a specific set time, as well as within a congragation.

We will use the results to highlight best practice and assist any unions which may, at this time, be finding it difficult to offer space to their Muslim students.

Please take a few minutes to fill in our survey.

If you have any questions please email fatema.suleman@nus.org.uk or ama.uzowuru@nus.org.uk.

One vote can make a difference

One vote can make a difference

London will be going to the polls on 1 May 2008 and among the parties standing is the BNP (British National Party). As London has a form of proportional representation, there is a risk that a BNP candidate could be elected – by voting for someone else, however, you can prevent this.

How could the BNP get elected?
Why you should vote for against the BNP Aside from the mayoral candidates, Londoners will also be able to choose their representatives in the London Assembly – which operates on the modified d’Hondt formula of proportional representation. Candidates with more than 5 per cent of the vote gain representation in the assembly – at the last election the BNP nearly reached this benchmark. The flyer to the left, from www.naar.org.uk/larag, explains how your one vote can make a difference – click on it to see the large version.

Elections are taking place across England and Wales – for more information see the Society and Citizenship page.
