About the NEC

This article replicates info found in NUSonline's about section.

The National Executive Committee is made up of 27 representatives who are elected at National Conference or at regional or liberation campaign conferences. Guided by the constitution they implement the policy and objectives of NUS and direct the work of its staff.

The NEC must meet at least three times in a financial year. The National President may call Executive meetings and he or she must also call a meeting on receipt of a written request from four members of the Executive. Quorum is reached by the attendance of at least half of the Committee.

All members of the NEC are expected to attend NEC meetings, National Council and Annual Conferences and any extraordinary conferences. An NEC member can only be removed by a vote of no confidence at a National Conference, although they can have areas of responsibility removed by a vote at National Council.

Contacting the NEC The NEC can be contacted for help or advice, to speak at meetings, or to visit your college. However, if you are seeking help on an issue as an individual, please speak to your students' union or association first, as NUS normally deals with cases referred to us by students' unions only. Your own union is likely to be able to provide the help or advice you may be seeking on individual matters.

Finding out about NUS policy The NEC ensure that NUS policy is put into practice. Policy itself, however, is discussed and set by NUS Annual Conference. NUS Scotland and Wales and NUS-USI in Northern Ireland also pass policies within their own jurisdictions, as do the liberation campaigns. To ask a question about NUS policy you can contact the National Secretary or another NEC member with responsibility for that issue. If you are unsure whom to contact, speak to your Regional Officer or Development and Training Officer who may be able to help. Even if they can't, they will certainly know who can.
