About the Campaigns UnitWhat do we do?
- We have a well-deserved reputation for high profile campaigning that reflects the issues and concerns of all students.
- Working together with students and students’ unions we develop campaign action plans, briefings and publicity materials.
- Lobbying parliament, organising demonstrations and disseminating news and research are vital parts of our campaigning, as is gaining the pro-active support of students in the UK.
How do we do it?
- NUS has priority campaigns in education funding and health and housing. Campaigning work in areas such as equality, the women’s campaign, representation of students with disabilities and black students and the environment.
- Our high profile campaign is the fight against top-up fees. In November 2003 we held the NUS Demo against top-up fees which was the largest student demonstration ever; 31,000 students protested.
- Campaign activities we have undertaken include a ‘email your MP’ function which saw 350 emails sent directly to MP’s in the first week it was live on nusonline.co.uk
Working together: achieving the best results:
- We provide students’ unions with support materials for you to implement locally such as the postcard campaign to Tony Blair against top-up fees, and a students’ in their union pack to encourage participation by students in their union and local community.
- To help with local involvement drives and to aid campaign building, we provide students’ unions with briefings and publicity materials.
- Currently we are organising a Mass Lobby of parliament. By students and officers from every union around the country simultaneously lobbying as many MPs as possible on the same day, just imagine the massive impact and talking point it will create around Westminster!
Officers that we help and support on a regular basis:
Presidents, Communications Officers, Welfare officers and all officers involved in campaign work.
