Horsesmouth is a new website that blends social enterprise and social networking. At www.horsesmouth.co.uk, members sign up and login to give and receive real advice from real people, on a confidential, one-to-one basis.

NUS got involved because we saw an opportunity to extend our support and welfare work. Our horsesmouth mentors will be able to adorn their profiles with an NUS badge, to show that they’re a trusted source of information on education. Subjects already being discussed on the site cover everything from starting up a new café franchise to dealing with cancer, but NUS mentors will specialise in topics relating to education and student life.

Being a mentor doesn’t stop you asking your own questions, as mentors can also be mentored via horsesmouth. An inbuilt email function keeps members’ real identities safe while they talk about problems, issues and inspirations.

Senior NUS staff have already started signing up, but we plan to extend our presence on the site in the near future. If you’re already giving advice and support as part of your activities as an NUS officer, you’re likely to be exactly the kind of person horsesmouth is looking for.
