Recruiting young trustees

Wednesday 1 October 2008, NCVO, London NUS and BYC partner for young trustees

NUS and the British Youth Council (BYC) are providing a unique opportunity for charities and voluntary organisations, such as yourselves, to meet existing young trustees and find out how you can diversify the age range of your trustee board.

There are 190,000 registered charities in England and Wales, with 900,000 trustees, but only 4,400 of those trustees (less than 1 per cent) are under 25. The aim of the event is to help organisations identify how to successfully recruit and retain young trustees. It is therefore suitable for those with responsibility for the recruitment of trustees, usually board chairs, chief executives and staff with governance support responsibilities.

The day will include key note speeches from Phil Hope MP, Minister for the third sector, and workshops on planning for recruitment, the expectations for young people sitting on governing bodies and how to tailor your meetings to these members.

The majority of event will be delivered by young trustees themselves, sharing their actual experiences and giving a first hand perspective on successful and age-diverse structures. A large proportion of the day will be given over to interaction between the delegates and young trustees, so you have plenty of opportunities, both formal and informal, to find answers to any questions you may have.

Students' unions are charities, often with multi-million pound budgets and more than 100 staff. NUS and students' unions together train more than 1,000 young trustees each year to manage and run these charities, providing young trustees with the training, skills, expertise and experience to be successful trustees - and potentially a great source of trustees for other organisations.

BYC is the recognised voice of young people in the UK and has a board made solely of under-25s.
