Black Students' Handbook 2007/08

Black Students' handbook 2007/08 created by NUS, National Union of Students, for students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent

This handbook is your guide to the NUS Black Students’ Campaign. It is a national resource for members of our campaign — all students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent — and for those black people thinking of entering further or higher education. It is also designed to help the many non-black student officers who want to support the diversity of their student body to better understand the experiences and aspirations of Britain’s one million black students.

Too often the experience of black students is marred by racism in education and in the wider community. The exclusion of black identities and perspectives from both the curriculum and mainstream student life can have a devastating impact. NUS black students’ campaign, as the largest movement of its kind in Europe, aims to put black students’ concerns back on the agenda. It exists to empower and inspire its members, to give them the confidence to overcome the barriers they face, and to help them fulfil their aspirations. By fostering unity and strength, we provide black students with a dedicated voice. We also celebrate diversity and the positive contributions black people make in every sphere of British life.

The national focus of NUS Black Students’ Campaign, combined with action by students’ unions at the local level, means that we can make a positive difference to the lives of all black people. Campuses can potentially become shining examples of the way in which multiculturalism operates successfully in practice. All students should have the opportunity to thrive regardless of race, religion, culture or background, and we all have a part to play in achieving this.

We hope that you find this handbook useful and we welcome any feedback or suggestions on how it could be strengthened. The NUS black students’ officer and committee are always on hand to provide support and encouragement to help you implement the different ideas within the handbook.
